Both moored just outside The Abbey grounds.

Here's just one of the beautiful pictures they had taken afterwards in the historic cloisters in The Abbey.

Meal at the Glenmoriston Arms

This was our first visit, recommended by several of our guests. The Glenmoriston Arms is just a 10 minute drive away from the Aonach Mor Apartments at The Abbey in Fort Augustus.

The restaurant was fully booked (always a good sign), the staff were efficient and friendly and the meal superb. There was plenty of choice for both adults and children and also some good vegetarian options. A definite recommendation.

Trip to Inverness

Just a 45 minute drive along the edge of Loch Ness is the Highland Capital of Inverness.

There's plenty to see and do in and around Inverness – just leave yourself enough time. Browse city shops old and new, from the Victorian Market to the new complex Eastgate II. If you like walking gear then the large Tiso (near B&Q) is also well worth a visit.

Take a stroll to Inverness Castle, currently used as a courthouse, and St Andrew's Cathedral, which dominate the River Ness and what has been described as one of the most beautiful riverside settings in Britain. Enjoy the fine circular walk from the castle along the river and through the Ness Islands where, in the peak season from July to October, you can watch anglers casting long lines to leaping Atlantic salmon.

Whilst in Inverness we often make the short trip to the shoreline of the Black Isle hoping to spot a dolphin or two.

Trip to Fort William

It's a beautiful drive to Fort William, especially in todays sunshine driving past stunning Loch Linnhe .

Fort William is about a 45minute drive from the Aonach Mor Apartments and we chose to go for a game of ten pin bowling at the Nevis Centre. There is also a great soft play area here for younger children with slides a bouncy castle and an overhead trail.

The day finished off with tea and cakes and a mooch around the outdoor clothing shops.

Visit Loch Coruisk

A fabulous sunny day on our trip to the Isle of Skye. One of the prettiest drives in Scotland and just 1 hour 20 mins to the Skye bridge from The Abbey in Fort Augustus.

Climbing aboard the Bella Jane you are welcomed by friendly and informative staff. The boat transports you to the isolated Loch Coruisk in the heart of the stunning Cullin Mountains. A 45 minute boat trip with breathtaking scenery and wildlife. We saw some guillemots & some seals basking in the sun.

We had an unhurried 1.5 hours at the Loch, enough time for a stroll and a picnic to the wonderful sound of the cuckoo. On the return boat trip I would definitely recommend the hot chocolate!

A wonderful day out. Why not try it!

Relaxing by the Caledonian Canal in Fort Augustus

After a very cold winter, it was lovely to see people relaxing by the canal (with a drink in hand) watching the boats negotiate the succession of locks on the Caledonian Canal. With a spectacular view down Loch Ness it really is one of the prettiest places to be.

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

Meal at 'The Bothy' in Fort Augustus

The Bothy sits beside the Calendonian Canal and has a small cosy bar with a good varied menu including several choices at £5 for kids. It got the thumbs up from our 6 year old. We were all full, more than satisfied and will certainly return.

Tuesday, 20 April 2010

Golf in Fort Augustus

The scenery at the Fort Augustus golf course is breathtaking, surrounded by mountains and sitting alongside the Caledonian Canal.

It really is a pleasure to play here and is open to all ages and abilities. It's a 9 hole course but with dual teeing positions it gives the feel of an 18 hole course.

If you are staying on holiday at the Aonach Mor Apartments why not try your hand. You can hire all the equipment you need at the course.

Good luck and have fun.
